The hi-res map refers to the outline vector map used for GRIB files.
You can see the difference between hi-res and low res simply by viewing a GRIB file, zoom in to have some coast line in view. Then please tap the menu button, tap settings and select map options. Here you can turn hi-res on or off. You should see a difference on the coast line when you toggle that switch.
